Jose Siri to miss 8-10 weeks with fractured tibia

Here are the Mets' center field options with Jose Siri hitting the IL - Amazin' Avenue

David Stearns addressed the media ahead of the Mets’ series opener against the Phillies this evening, and revealed that Jose Siri is expected to miss between eight and ten weeks with a fractured tibia.

Siri fouled a ball off his leg on April 12th against the Athletics, and had to be helped both off the field and again on to a golf cart. Two days later, the extent of the injury was revealed, although the timeframe for recovery was still unknown at the time.

Siri was acquired for reliever Eric Orze in November of last year. Siri, 29 years old, is under team control until 2028. A lifetime .207/.265/.403 hitter, Siri was off to a slow start for the Mets, hitting .050/.208/.100 with just one extra base hit in 24 plate appearances.

In his stead, Tyrone Taylor has picked up most of the innings in center field. With limited center field options, Brandon Nimmo has played two innings in center this season, as well as recent call up José Azocar getting a start in center over the weekend.

If Tayor and/or Azocar don’t work out for the Mets, there are a few options in the upper minor leagues in both Jett Williams and Drew Gilbert. Neither is off to such a start that the Mets may be looking to call them up, but who knows what will happen over the next few weeks for any of these players.
