Chiefs Reveal ‘Lock-Up’ Plan For Pro Bowl Lineman

Former Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith named to NFL All-Rookie Team

Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes was sacked 36 times in the 2024 season, which is the highest mark of his career. As a result, the team will likely be looking to upgrade their offensive line while keeping their stars in the position group.

During his pre-draft news conference, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach talked about star offensive guard Trey Smith, and said that the team is hoping they can sign him to a new deal very soon.

“Hopefully we get that done. There’s no lack of interest or will or desire on our end,” Veach said. “My guess is once the draft’s over and our focus is back on taking care of the players that are here and trying to get those guys locked up… once things settle down on both ends, we’ll be in a position to continue this dialogue and hopefully make some progress there. There’s no secret there that we’d like to get Trey locked up.”

Smith’s agents at CAA have a number of other clients who are about to be drafted in the 2025 NFL Draft, so their focus is on that at the moment. But once the draft has concluded, Veach is hoping they can sign the star guard to a new deal as soon as possible.

Smith played in all 17 games for the Chiefs this past season, and was named to the first Pro Bowl of his young career as a result of his consistent play.

The Chiefs are coming off of a Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, so they are looking to redeem themselves and come back with a vengeance in 2025. One thing that would help them do that is “locking up” an offensive linemen of Smith’s caliber.
