When you think about potential trade partners in the draft, the first ones that come to mind are teams interested in moving up for quarterbacks. That’s why the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants were automatically viewed as possible targets if the Green Bay Packers want to trade out of the first round next week.
But suddenly, there is another potential team wanting to move up, and it wouldn’t be necessary to go down as dramatically.
In ESPN’s latest intel article ahead of the draft, analyst Matt Miller mentioned that the Kansas City Chiefs could be interested in moving up to secure an offensive tackle.
“I’ve heard that the Kansas City Chiefs are actively looking to trade up in Round 1. They signed left tackle Jaylon Moore in free agency but were otherwise quiet, opting to re-sign their own versus hitting the open market. A move up in Round 1 would likely be for a long-term offensive tackle solution; I heard the goal would be to move in front of the Houston Texans (No. 25) and Los Angeles Rams (No. 26) if the Chiefs like a specific left tackle still on the board.” Matt Miller.
That’s interesting because, while the Packers could certainly use a tackle, it doesn’t seem like a priority for the roster compared to positions like cornerback, edge rusher, defensive tackle, or wide receiver. Therefore, it’s realistic to make a trade for a team that has different priorities.
According to the Jimmy Johnson draft value chart, the 23rd overall pick equals 760 points, while the 31st pick from the Chiefs is worth 600 points. To make up for the difference, the Chiefs would have to give up late third- and fourth-round picks.
Another possible scenario would include the Chiefs sending their own second-rounder (or an early third via the Tennessee Titans) and a fourth, with the Packers sending the first- and the third-rounder too.
Over the past three years, nobody has had more draft picks than the Packers—35 since 2022. This year, though, the team only has eight, which would be tied to the fewest since Brian Gutekunst took over as a general manager in 2018.
Green Bay only has 29 players under contract for the 2026 season, so moving back to add more volume of picks would make a lot of sense. And if the Chiefs want to move up ahead of the Houston Texans, the Packers could be the ideal partner.
