Latest update on Chiefs RG Trey Smith contract negotiations makes all the sense in the world with the 2025 NFL Draft fast approaching

Trey Smith is a crucial piece of the Kansas City Chiefs offense, so it’s no surprise that they want to keep him around. The team placed the franchise tag on him and both sides have made it clear that they are interested in getting a long-term deal done.

But so far, there’s no deal.

With that, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach gave an update on where they stand with the starting right guard in his pre-draft press conference on Thursday.

“Hopefully we get that done,” Veach told reporters. “There’s no lack of interest or will or desire on our end and we did have Pete (Sweeney), a ton of talk with Tory (Dandy) and Jimmy (Sexton), his agent, heading into the combine. Those conversations continued on to the owner’s meetings and so now – also, CAA has a ton of draft prospects, and they have a ton going on, so we’ve exchanged multiple phone calls (and) multiple emails.”

The NFL Draft is everyone’s focus right now including CAA.

“My guess is once the draft’s over and our focus is back on taking care of the players that are here and trying to get those guys locked up,” Veach continued. “CAA, on their end, they are one of the leading agencies in regards to the players they produce every year, so I’m sure once things settle down on both ends, we’ll be in a position to continue this dialogue and hopefully make some progress there.

“There’s no secret there that we’d like to get Trey (Smith) locked up.”

And for Smith, he feels the exact same way. When he was asked, he even said that there’s no chance he will be playing for another team.

“I just leave it all in my agent’s hands,” Smith said on FS1’S “First Things First” at the beginning of April. “I got Jimmy Sexton and Tory Dandy of CAA, they do a phenomenal job. And (Chiefs GM) Brett Veach and the whole office staff, who I appreciate. I love working with them as well. And at the end of the day, we just keep working at it. I’m just excited.

“I’m coming back, that’s the best part about it. Just ready to go back to work and get back on that feeling of trying to get back to that goal, get a Super Bowl. But I just leave everything else for my agents, let them do all that. No delegation of that matter. But I’m just focused on being great, just being one percent better every single day, and be the best player I can every day for this organization.”
