The Kansas City Chiefs know where their roster weakness are, but with only a handful of draft picks (eight), they can’t fill all their holes in the upcoming draft.
That means they must identify the biggest holes and address them first, which for most is the offensive line.
However, while there is merit to fortifying Patrick Mahomes’ protection, so too is getting some more grunt along the defensive line to help Chris Jones and George Karlaftis.
For CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso, in his “what I would do” mock draft, he has LSU edge rusher Bradyn Swinson.
“Explosive, productive outside rusher from the SEC to give George Karlaftis a boost in Kansas City,” Trapasso writes.
Coming off his best-ever college season, Swinson totaled 8.5 sacks and 13.0 tackles for loss, 58 combined tackles, and two forced fumbles.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein called Swinson “an ascending talent with the demeanor, traits, and talent to become a good starter” in his evaluation, as he could come in and be part of the defensive line rotation for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.
With Jones not getting any younger, the Chiefs need to draft a potential replacement, and depth at the position is a big need. While some have Swinson as a second-or third-round pick based on talent, as we know, once they get into the NFL system, their game can go up a level.
That will be the hope for Swinson as the Chiefs add to their defensive line depth with an eye towards the future, with Jones entering the twilight of his career.
