Griffin Canning to miss tomorrow’s start with illness

Griffin Canning returns to mound as Angels beat Nationals - Los Angeles Times Mets’ starter Griffin Canning has been scratched from his Wednesday start against the Twins due to an undisclosed illness. New York has not yet announced a replacement starter.

Justin Hagenman is the likeliest option to replace Canning, as he is both on the 40-man roster and would be on regular rest. The right-handed has posted a 6.97 ERA in 10 13 innings for Triple-A Syracuse this season. He’s struck out 12 batters, walked four, and served up four home runs this year. The Mets have not yet placed Jose Siri on the IL, so that will likely be the move to get their new starter up for Wednesday. Anthony DiComo noted that the team is considering a bullpen game.

The Mets were already planning to call up a sixth starter this week to give Kodai Senga an extra day of rest in between starts. David Peterson is still on schedule to pitch on Thursday, but the Mets will now need a spot starter for both Wednesday and Friday. José Ureña is an option to go on Friday, but he would need to be added to the 40-man roster. It’s unclear whether the Mets would consider calling up top prospect Brandon Sproat to get the start on Friday.

Canning last started for New York on Friday against the Athletics. He earned his first win for New York, going 5 13 innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
