The Los Angeles Dodgers need a permanent solution in center field. Andy Pages isn’t good enough defensively to make up for his lackluster offense at the plate.
Through 47 at-bats this season, Pages is posting a slash line of .149/.273/.298 for the Dodgers. You don’t have to be a diehard baseball fan to know that slash line is awful.
As a result, the Dodgers could turn to Red Sox utility man Ceddanne Rafaela. Rafela isn’t performing as good as he would like, but his batting average is 71 points higher than Pages.
Through 50 at-bats Rafaela has a slash line of .220/.291/.260 which also shows he finds his way on base at a higher rate.
Adding Rafaela would give the Dodgers another advantage they currently don’t have with Pages.
Rafaela is also capable of playing shortstop and second base, so the Dodgers could get creative with him, Tommy Edman and Mookie Betts as to how they get deployed on a nightly basis. Just a year ago, Rafaela posted 2.8 bWAR with the Red Sox with 544 at-bats.
This puts him right on the edge between being a league-average player and above average. It’s a slower start to the season than he would like, but he has the upside to turn things around this year.
Rafaela currently has more than six years of team control remaining, plus a $16 million club option in 2032.
Up front, it would seem highly unlikely a deal is reached.
However, the Red Sox are starting to use Kristian Campbell in center field more, which could lead to Rafaela being the odd man out in Boston.
