Despite coming out one year ago, this Taylor Swift song is finally gaining popularity and could be her next song of the summer.
Swift has had countless hits throughout her career, but “Cruel Summer” is typically considered her ultimate song for that season.
The track was on her 2019 Lover album but was not made an official single until 2023.
Since the pandemic put an early end to Swift’s Lover era, and she released folklore and evermore soon after, “Cruel Summer” didn’t get its chance to shine until the Eras Tour kicked off in 2023. It ultimately went number one four years after its release.
However, Swifties are now pushing for another Taylor Swift song to be the song of the summer this year.
Fresh Out The Slammer Is Blowing Up On Social Media
The Song Has Gone Viral On TikTok
“Fresh Out The Slammer” is the seventh track on The Tortured Poets Department, and despite its popularity, it’s not an official single. However, as is the case with a lot of Taylor Swift’s songs, the tracks she chooses as singles aren’t always the ones that resonate most with fans. Instead, Swifties tend to fall in love with more underrated tracks, and they’ve made their love for “Fresh Out The Slammer” clear via several viral TikToks.
Many of the videos are fans with a new love for the song singing along to it, or fans who loved it from day one announcing how validated they feel.
However, another reason the song has gotten so big on social media is due to popular fan edits of Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The pair played a couple in the 2023 rom-com Anyone But You and were recently seen together at a family wedding after Sweeney allegedly called off her engagement.

There’s One Song Taylor Swift Refused To Play Live For 13 Years
Taylor Swift typically loves playing her older music for her fans. However, there was one older song she put to the side for over a decade.
TikTok users found the song very fitting for the alleged scenario as Swift sings about leaving an old relationship for a new one. “Fresh Out The Slammer” gained more popularity when Swift’s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff praised the song’s TikTok virality and admitted it is his favorite on the album.
Why The Song Is The Perfect Summer Anthem
“Fresh Out The Slammer” Represents New Beginnings
The Tortured Poets Department track is seemingly about the end of Taylor Swift’s relationship with actor Joe Alwyn and the beginning of her fling with 1975 singer Matty Healy.
Swift sings about feeling misunderstood by her partner and put under a spell that made her hang on to the relationship much longer than she should have.
Ultimately, she ended up feeling imprisoned, so when she finally got out, it was like being released from jail. However, Swift mentions summer and winter in the song’s first verse, and the song does feel like a metaphor for leaving winter behind for the warmer seasons.
Spring and summer are the months when things come back to life, and with more sunlight and warmth, there’s more motivation to get out of the house and enjoy the outdoors.
“My friends tried, but I wouldn’t hear it
Watch me daily disappearing
For just one glimpse of his smile
All those nights, you kept me going
Swirled you into all of my poems
Now we’re at the starting line, I did my time.”
Through this perspective, there’s no better song to represent summer than “Fresh Out The Slammer.” If Swifties keep the “Fresh Out The Slammer” trend going, Taylor Swift might have another “Cruel Summer” case scenario on her hands.
