The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed Charles Omenihu in the offseason hoping that he can replicate the production he had before his injury near the end of the 2023 season. Omenihu put together a solid season in 2023, appearing in 11 regular season games and tallying a career-high seven sacks.
Omenihu returned in time to help the Chiefs during the playoff run and fans were excited to see him rejoin the team. Fortunately, the feeling was mutual, as Omenihu spoke about why he decided to re-sign with the Chiefs and praised everyone involved.
“I appreciate Brett [Veach] and Coach Reid and Mr. Clark [Hunt] for bringing me back and giving me an opportunity,” Omenihu said. “I wanted to come back, that was a big factor. I love being here, I love the organization. I’ve had a lot of success here, so it wasn’t too much of a hard decision when the opportunity presented itself.”
Charles Omenihu said re-signing with Chiefs wasn’t “a hard decision”
Omenihu first signed with the Chiefs two years ago after spending a year and a half with the 49ers. Fans were a little unsure of him at first but he quickly proved Brett Veach right, setting a career high in sacks and tackles.
If there’s been one less than ideal thing with Omenihu it’s that he’s struggled to stay healthy, missing six regular-season games in 2023 and 11 games this past season while he recovered from his ACL injury. That being said, the injuries haven’t stopped Omenihu from producing at a high level for Kansas City and he said it’s motivation for him to continue balling out.
“Life is about adversity, life is about overcoming it, and I think what keeps me at peace is that — knock on wood — there’s not any of that anymore. God willing, I’ll be able to play the home opener. I haven’t been able to play game one since my fourth year in the league, and I’m going into my seventh.”
The Chiefs re-signed Omenihu to a one-year deal worth $4 million, which feels like a steal given what he’s done in recent years with the team. Perhaps the injuries played into why this deal feels like a bargain but hey, Chiefs fans will take it.
Omenihu was clearly happy about coming back and the Chiefs were also happy to keep him in Kansas City for at least another year.
