The Kansas City Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl last season after a 15-2 regular season and won the AFC again. But given the manner of the Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, doubts have crept in over the offense’s ability to protect Patrick Mahomes.
No. 15 was sacked a total of 47 times in 2024 (including playoffs), which was the most in his career, so it makes sense for the franchise to do its best to upgrade his protection.
Jaylon Moore was signed to be the starting left tackle, but that move doesn’t ease the fears over the position, plus guard is also another problematic area.
For ESPN’s Jordan Reid, he’s outlined the draft needs for the Chiefs, and to no one’s surprise, it has an offensive theme.
“Moore won’t prevent the Chiefs from devoting more resources to improving their problematic tackle situation,” Reid wrote. “Kansas City wants a player with experience at left and right tackle. Josh Simmons (Ohio State) makes a lot of sense if he falls due to concern over his torn patellar tendon. He could compete with Moore or supplant Jawaan Taylor at right tackle. Running back is on the table for the Chiefs on Day 2.”
So, both tackle spots and running back appear to be the Chiefs’ big needs heading into the early rounds of the draft.
The right tackle spot is an interesting one with Taylor and his penalty issues. As for running back, Hunt and Elijah Mitchell are on one-year deals, and Pacheco is in the final year of his rookie deal, so it might make sense to look toward the future.
But there can be no mistaking that the offensive line, for most, should be the first port of call for the Chiefs in the draft.
The left tackle spot with Moore right now is in decent shape, but is that enough for Andy Reid and Mahomes to make it back to the Super Bowl? Color us skeptical on that, which is why adding another depth piece/potential starter in the early rounds will give the Chiefs the best chance at bringing those high sack totals down.
