The Chiefs seem to be content letting Carson Wentz hit free agency and have been in the market for a backup quarterback this offseason.
The Chiefs added Gardner Minshew in free agency and brought back Bailey Zappe, both on one-year deals. The team also has Chris Oladokun as depth who spent most of the year on the practice squad last season.
Andy Reid typically likes to have veteran QBs as backups who have game experience and can help in the film room. The team likely brought in Minshew to play that role as a quality backup and a veteran player who can help on the scout team in the film room.
Despite this, Gardner Mishew (and the other two QBs) have contracts the team could easily move on from and the Chiefs could be looking for their future backup QB in the later rounds of the draft. Let’s look at some options.
Taylor Elgersma – Canada
The first guy that I have listed here is a bit of an under-the-radar player who has displayed all the physical tools to be successful at the NFL level.
Elgersma is a guy who really intrigues me after his performance at the Senior Bowl, where he impressed me but had some missteps as well. He shows off a big tall frame as well as a top-tier arm in this year’s draft with an upside to be productive in the NFL.
Elgersma is going to take some time before he can be a solid NFL quarterback, and may be an option as a UDFA after the draft.
It’s unlikely he will be ready to hold a QB 2 role in the NFL on day one, but could be a third option in Kansas City behind Minshew. Elgersma is unlikely to provide depth in Week 1, but shows flashes of being a potential NFL QB and could carve out a role for himself with some development in Kansas City.
Max Brosmer – Minnesota
Brosmer is almost the opposite of Elgersma, as he is a polished older QB prospect who is more likely to provide day-one depth for the Chiefs.
Brosmer is on the smaller side and is more of a traditional pocket passer than anything else. He has a solid arm that will play at the NFL level but may not jump off the screen, but goes through reads well and has a good feel for the game.
Brosmer started his career at New Hampshire where he had great production and showed enough talent to hit the portal and find his way to the big ten for his senior year.
Brosmer continued his success and looked comfortable, even at the higher level of competition.
With his poise and general feel for the game, Brosmer could be a good seventh-round or UDFA option for the Chiefs and could come in and compete for the QB2 spot.
Seth Henigan – Memphis
Henigan is maybe my favorite option for the Chiefs to pick up as their potential backup QB.
The three-time bowl game MVP, Hennigan is a very talented player who has a very good arm and a gunslinger mentality that would be the perfect fit behind Patrick Mahomes.
Hennigan has been a four-year starter at Memphis where he has impressed me with his raw talent.
Henigan has a great frame for an NFL QB and stands tall in the pocket where he can deliver with his strong arm. The gripe with Hennigan is that his offense at Memphis was somewhat simple and there are questions about his ability to play in an NFL defense.
There is also some concern about him being a loose cannon with poor touch on deeper balls. But I think Henigan would fit perfectly in the Chiefs offense and could develop very well behind Patrick Mahomes.
DJ Uiagalelei – Florida State
I am 100% sure that some people saw this name and instantly closed the article, but hear me out.
DJU has been one of the most hated players in all of college football throughout his career, and after a disastrous season at Florida State this season, many fans and analysts have given up hope.
But if the Chiefs are able to get their hands on him as a UDFA, I still think there is something there if a team gave him a legitimate shot to develop.
Coming out of college, DJ was the number two high school player in the nation and was considered the heir to Trevor Lawrence at Clemson.
Let’s just say this did not go according to plan and DJ was promptly replaced by Cade Klubnik. DJ then found his way to Oregon State where I thought he looked good but still needed some work. That’s when everything hit the fan…
Simply put, Florida State was AWFUL this season, and DJ certainly did not help his draft stock with his performance this season.
To pile salt into the wound, DJ had surgery on his throwing hand and has not been able to participate in many offseason showcases.
But despite all that, I am willing to go out on a limb and say that he is worth a shot.
Throughout his career, we have seen flashes, and signs that he could be all that was promised when he was coming out of high school.
The biggest struggle for DJU has always been turnovers, and he will need to find consistency as right now he has just about zero.
But if any team can work with a raw, talented, gunslinging undisciplined quarterback, it’s Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He would be a great UDFA pickup who could compete for a roster spot down the line.
