BREAKING NEWS: Trey Smith strikes optimistic tone about signing long-term deal with Chiefs

Fox Sports broadcaster/Chiefs fan Nick Wright tried his best.

Guard Trey Smith was a guest on “First Things First,” and Wright attempted to get to the bottom of what was happening with contract negotiations between Smith and the Chiefs.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Smith earlier this year and he is set to earn $23.403 million in the 2025 season. The Chiefs would benefit from signing Smith to a long-term deal that doesn’t include a large salary-cap hit for the upcoming season.

The good news from the perspective of fans who want Smith to stay with the Chiefs long term is the two sides are talking and trying to work out the details of a multi-year deal. Smith seems optimistic that a deal will be reached.

“I just leave it all in my agents’ hands. I got Jimmy Sexton and Tory Dandy at CAA, they do a phenomenal job,” Smith said on “First Things First.” “And, (Chiefs GM) Brett Veach, the whole front office staff we have, Chris Shea (senior vice president of football operations and strategy), they’re phenomenal people and I love working with them as well.

“And at the end of the day, we just keep working at it.”

Smith said regardless of the status of a new contract, he’s excited to start the season on the Chiefs offensive line.

“I know I’m coming back, so that’s gonna be the best part about it,” Smith said. “And just ready to go back to work and get back on that field and trying to get back to that goal, getting to the Super Bowl. But I just leave everything out to my agents, let them do all that and all the delegation of that matter. But I’m just focused on being great and just being 1% better every single day, so I can bring my best to be the best player I can for that organization.”

While on the “Up & Adams” show last week, Smith shared his thoughts on Chiefs fans and a long-term deal.

Smith expressed his desire to remain with the Chiefs.

“Ultimately, I can only focus on just working out and training,” he said. “I love Kansas City. It’s my home. I love the Chiefs. The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I’ve ever been around. Ultimately, I would love to stay there. That’s my plan.”
