The Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors faced off in a crucial late-season matchup on Thursday night.
The Warriors came away with the much needed 123-116 win over the Lakers. With the Lakers and Warriors currently sitting in the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the Western Conference respectively, these storied franchises could meet in the first-round of the NBA playoffs.
All eyes were on the stars inside Crypto.com Arena for this one, and while LeBron James and Stephen Curry both showed out, Luka Doncic had a game to forget.
Doncic scored just 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field, including shooting 0-of-6 from 3-point range.
Lakers head coach, JJ Redick, made his thoughts perfectly clear on Doncic’s struggles after the loss, sending a four-word message during his postgame interview. “It wasn’t his night,” Redick said.
Prior to Thursday night’s poor performance, Doncic had found his way in a Lakers uniform.
Doncic was averaging 27.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 7.9 assists in 22 games as a Laker heading into the Warriors showdown. Despite Doncic’s poor shooting performance, the majority of the Lakers starting lineup came to play.
James finished with 33 points, nine assists, and five rebounds with five made 3-pointers. Austin Reaves poured in 31 points, six rebounds, and three assists with nine made 3-pointers.
And Rui Hachimura contributed 24 points, six rebounds, and three assists. None of these scoring efforts was enough to best Curry and the Warriors.
Curry dropped 37 points, six assists, and three rebounds on the Lakers, leading the Warriors to their fourth straight win.
With just six games remaining in the regular season, the Lakers will likely need Doncic to revert back to the MVP version of himself to fend off the surging Warriors in the standings.
Doncic and the Lakers next chance to get back in the win-column comes on Friday night at 10:30 p.m. EDT against the New Orleans Pelicans.
