Many pundits expect the Kansas City Chiefs to regress in 2025. This is primarily based on the wretchedness of what NFL fans saw in the final game of last season. KC was run over and through by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.
Basing future projections on one bad game is not wise, however.
We can assume the Chiefs will have a good defense again, and Patrick Mahomes is a future Hall of Famer.
The team will be just fine in 2025 and beyond.
Kansas City does need to tinker with the roster a bit, though. Some players must go if the Chiefs make good decisions in the 2025 NFL draft. These three could be among the players who could be left off next season’s roster.
These three Chiefs might have issues making the 2025 roster
Wide receiver Skyy Moore
Moore was supposed to be a Tyreek Hill-lite kind of player. He was fast and could find the openings in the defense and create explosive plays. At least, that was the theory when he was chosen in the second round of the 2022 draft. As things have turned out, Moore seems too small and not quick enough to help quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the passing attack.
In six games in 2024, Moore was only targeted three times, and he dropped two of them. He hasn’t had pass-catching issues, but he doesn’t get much separation. Kansas City is still trying to find numerous receivers to help Mahomes, and they should address that in the 2025 NFL draft. If that happens, Moore could be gone.
Offensive lineman Wanya Morris
Morris was given a chance to start at left tackle for the Chiefs full-time beginning in the second game of last year. He was, in a word, terrible. To make matters worse, he regressed as the season wore on, ending with a Week 13 performance against the Las Vegas Raiders where he allowed eight total pressures.
Morris’s snap count went up last year over his rookie season of 2023, but his efficiency got much worse. There is certainly no guarantee that the team can count on him moving forward. If, as expected, Kansas City addresses its offensive line need in the draft, Chiefs fans might have seen the end of Morris.
Quarterback Bailey Zappe
Zappe has not played a down of football for the Chiefs as he was re-signed as a free agent this offseason. Last year, he was added by KC, but he never made it off the practice squad. He eventually left for the Cleveland Browns and started the game of the season for them. What made bringing Zappe back odd was that the Chiefs signed Gardner Minshew the day before.
Of the two quarterbacks, Minshew has proven to be the better NFL quarterback. KC is not going to keep three quarterbacks active on the roster, so maybe Zappe should go back to the practice squad. The move to add him could have been made later in the offseason or not at all. After bringing on Minshew, adding Zappe again made zero sense.
