Every once in a while, posts claiming that pop superstar Taylor Swift announced she would move away from the United States for political reasons go viral on social media.
For example, a March 31, 2025, post on Facebook sharing the rumor garnered over 50,000 likes.
The post claimed that at the “end of her legendary show,” Swift said she was “never coming back to the States” because she did not “want to breathe the same air as that jerk.” The post’s image featured a picture of Swift alongside one of tech billionaire and close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump Elon Musk.
However, Swift’s monumental Eras Tour ended in December 2024, not March 2025, according to The Associated Press.
Although the photo strongly implied she was referring to Musk, it never specified directly who Swift did not want to “breathe the same air” as.
The viral post provided a link to a supposed news site as evidence the rumor was true, and some readers seemed to interpret the rumor as a factual recounting of real-life events. However, the article was poorly written and contained several contradictions — including the claim that Swift decided to “return to America.” In other words, it was not a trustworthy source of information.
There was no reliable evidence that Swift was moving to Canada — the claim is false. If, hypothetically speaking, there was even a sliver of truth to the claim — if the pop star had even hinted at a move to Canada — tabloids and celebrity gossip outlets would have documented the ordeal.
Instead, they were reporting that she and boyfriend Travis Kelce may have been looking for houses in Montana.
Snopes has checked several previous claims alleging that Swift had announced she would move out of the United States. In February 2024, we checked a false claim that Swift and Kelce announced they would leave the country if then-former President Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. In April 2024, we disproved another rumor alleging Swift, this time alongside Miley Cyrus, would leave the country depending on the election’s outcome.
