Trent Alexander-Arnold is still considering his future, with former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock suggesting he may stay at Anfield if the club ensures he becomes one of its top earners.
Despite widespread expectations that the England international will join Real Madrid as a free agent this summer—reportedly on a £12 million-a-year deal—Warnock believes a new Liverpool contract is still possible.
Speaking on BBC Football Focus, Warnock pointed out that Alexander-Arnold may be holding out for a salary comparable to Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom earn significantly more than his current £9 million-per-year deal.
“If you look at Van Dijk and Salah, their wages are massive. Because Trent is a local lad, he’s not on their level, but he’s probably thinking, ‘Pay me what they’re getting.’”
Liverpool fans are growing frustrated at the prospect of losing a key player on a free transfer, especially one who has been at the club since the age of six and has won six major trophies.
As uncertainty remains over whether Salah and Van Dijk will extend their contracts, Alexander-Arnold’s future could hinge on Liverpool’s willingness to meet his wage demands.
