MLB Rumors: Boston Red Sox ‘close’ on lucrative contract extension with young star

The Boston Red Sox have one of the best MLB farm systems in 2025 with young talent ready to make an impact at the major-league level for a club with World Series aspirations. With the franchise already headed in the right direction, one young star could be on the verge of a contract extension.

Boston has positioned itself well for long-term success, all while it is poised to be one of the best MLB teams in 2025. A huge part of the optimism surrounding the team this season centers on young talent on the roster. That’s even with some of the Red Sox top prospects opening their seasons in the minor leagues.

The Red Sox have already received major-league contributions from Kristian Campbell, rated by MLB.com as the seventh-best prospect in baseball. There are also expectations for Boston’s No. 1 prospect, outfielder Roman Anthony, along with No. 3 prospect Marcelo Mayer to contribute in the big leagues soon. Now, the club is reportedly poised to secure one of their future stars is rewarded with a new deal that will also give the team plenty of financial flexibility in the future.

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, the Red Sox are “in deep talks” on a contract extension with Campbell. Just hours after he hit his first big-league home run, Boston and its young second baseman are “close’ to a multi-year deal.

  • Krisitian Campbell stats (ESPN): .500/.583/.900, 1.483 OPS, 1 home run, 2 walks, 5 hits in 10 ABs

Campbell, age 22, earned a spot in the Red Sox lineup on Opening Day after a strong showing this spring. The 6-foot-3 infielder’s emergence also allowed the club to keep Alex Bregman at third base and shift Rafael Devers to designated hitter, significantly improving the club’s fielding.

  • Kristian Campbell contract (Spotrac): $760,000 salary in 2026,pre-arbitration through 2027

This isn’t something Boston needed to pursue immediately. Even if Campbell spent the entire 2025 season in the Red Sox lineup, he’d still be under team control for the next six seasons and he wouldn’t be arbitration-eligible until 2028.

However, signing Campbell to a contract extension now would likely buy out those arbitration years. Because the arbitration process involves teams arguing why a player shouldn’t be paid more, it can hurt the relationship between a franchise and one of its most important pieces.

An extension eliminates that and Campbell’s contract could include team options that could allow the club to prevent him from becoming a free agent in 2030. As for Campbell, he’ll receive a raise and immediately be guaranteed tens of millions of dollars after playing just a handful of MLB games. While he might lose some money in the latter years of his deal, the guaranteed money now makes it worth it.
