News Update: Chiefs host 2025 NFL Draft visit with tight end from Patrick Mahomes’ alma mater

West Virginia v Texas Tech

The latest reported pre-draft visit for the Kansas City Chiefs has some loose ties to two franchise figures, past and present. Perhaps that will work in favor for Texas Tech tight end Jalin Conyers as he spends time with Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and his staff.

Justin Melo reported on Friday that Conyers was drawing specific interest from a number of NFL teams leading into the late-April draft—a list that included Kansas City in addition to the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, and Houston Texans among others.

What could aid Conyers with K.C. in particular is the fact that he’s a Red Raider just like the team’s star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Just like BYU players likely enjoy some benefit from attending Andy Reid’s alma mater, Conyers can hope his time at Texas Tech could yield similar favor.

Patrick Mahomes would certainly approve of any Chiefs’ interest here, we assume.

Conyers began his college career as a redshirt freshman for Arizona State in 2020, which placed him under the charge of head coach Herm Edwards, who was a former head coach for the Chiefs from 2006=2008. Conyers remained at ASU for four years before transferring to Texas Tech for his fifth and final season in 2024.

As for production, Conyers was a steady go-to offensive option for the last three seasons, two at Arizona State. He’s averaged 33 catches and 368 receiving yards during that span, and was named second-team All-Big 12 last season with 30 catches for 320 yards and 5 touchdowns.

That said, Conyers is an older prospect who is going to be 24 years old before the start of the regular season. Maybe that has an upside given his experience, which could help him make an earlier impact than other rookies. It will be interesting to see how NFL teams view his tape, but there’s plenty to like with his size and athleticism.

The Chiefs’ roster is a tough nut to crack for incoming tight ends, however. Travis Kelce is sticking around for another year, while Noah Gray and Jared Wiley are also locked up.

Robert Tonyan is around to compete as a veteran addition this offseason while Anthony Firkser and Baylor Cupp remain on the roster as depth and developmental options.
