For some, the backup quarterback position is one of the best in pro sports. You hardly play, get a good salary, you are rarely in the spotlight, and have few worries…but that’s not how Gardner Minshew is approaching his time with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Already an experienced starter in the NFL, Minshew comes to the Chiefs to back up Patrick Mahomes, who has played every game he has needed to over the past four seasons.
So, it will be tough for Minshew to get many live-game reps with his new team, but he knows his role in the locker room and is ready to do anything to ensure that things run smoothly.
“If there’s any way I can help this team, whether it’s from the scout team, helping Pat [Mahomes] in meetings, whether it’s just bringing the good energy to practice,” Minshew said. “I look forward to just doing whatever I can to contribute and help this team win.”
Carson Wentz was Mahomes’ backup last season and managed one start in Week 18 with the Chiefs already locking up the No. 1 seed in the AFC, so Minshew will be coming to an organization that is known for winning…a lot.
Unless he is injured, Mahomes will be the starter, so Minshew will look to help the three-time Super Bowl winner any way he can to take something off Patrick’s plate and allow him to play better.
Of course, it isn’t an exact science, but for Minshew, he isn’t about to sit back and wait for his chance; he’s doing anything he can to ensure the Chiefs’ winning formula continues in 2025.
