BREAKING NEWS: With Kristian Campbell on team, how does Boston Red Sox 26-man roster look?

Zack Kelly

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox — at least for the most part — have officially departed Florida. A large contingent of players, coaches are en route to Monterrey, Mexico for a two-game exhibition series with others who were in major league camp headed north to join Triple-A Worcester. A small group of key players will remain at Fenway South for a couple more days to work out on the back fields before joining the Red Sox in Arlington, Texas, ahead of their season opener on Thursday.

Manager Alex Cora has been unusually coy about where things stand when it comes to the 26-man roster. In fact, he said there were no roster decisions to announce around the same time the club informed top prospect Kristian Campbell that he would be part of the Opening Day roster.

In recent days, the team has announced roster cuts in drips while informing a larger number of players of their fates. Technically, after officially optioning righty Quinn Priester to minor league camp Sunday morning, the team has a 43 players left in camp, including 11 non-roster invitees. In reality, Craig Breslow and Co. are much closer to their final 26-man group than that number might suggest.

Here’s where the Red Sox currently stand with their Opening Day roster, based on movement over the last couple days, after the decision to carry Campbell on Thursday:

PITCHERS (13)

LOCKS (9): SP Garrett Crochet, SP Tanner Houck, SP Walker Buehler, SP Richard Fitts, RP Aroldis Chapman, RP Liam Hendriks, RP Justin Slaten, RP Garrett Whitlock, RP Justin Wilson

ANALYSIS: Nine pitchers are guaranteed spots. Crochet, Houck, Buehler and Fitts will comprise four of the five rotation spots and Cora said Chapman (the expected closer), Hendriks, Slaten, Whitlock and Wilson are all locks for the bullpen.

After sending Priester down and releasing Adam Ottavino after he opted out of his minor league contract, the Red Sox list 22 healthy pitchers as still being in camp (plus rehabbing starter Patrick Sandoval, who is on the 60-day injured list already). In reality, that number is much lower. Five pitchers (Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, Lucas Giolito, Chris Murphy and Zach Penrod) will start the year on the injured list. Three others — Michael Fulmer, Bryan Mata and Matt Moore — have been told they’re headed to Triple-A Worcester to start the season, per sources. So the Red Sox really have five pitchers vying for four spots in the 26-man group. There is one rotation spot and three bullpen openings to be decided.

Left competing for those openings are two rotation candidates (Cooper Criswell and Sean Newcomb) and three relievers (Brennan Bernardino, Zack Kelly and Greg Weissert). The No. 5 starter spot is likely Newcomb’s, though the Red Sox could opt to go with Criswell if he shows them enough before that turn comes around in Baltimore on March 31. Bernardino, Kelly and Weissert, all on the 40-man roster, are squarely in the mix for bullpen spots, though Criswell could make the team as a long man. The decision might come down to whether or not the Red Sox want to carry a long reliever (Criswell) or a third lefty (Bernardino) behind Chapman and Wilson.

Cora likely won’t name a closer before Opening Day, instead simply choosing to let the public know his ninth-inning choice based on who enters the game in the first save situation. But all signs continue to point to Chapman.

As always, the projected pitching staff could be disrupted by a last-minute addition. Last year, things seemed pretty set before the Red Sox grabbed Chase Anderson after the Pirates cut him and took him on their roster as a long man.

POSITION PLAYERS (13)

LOCKS (13*): C Connor Wong, C Carlos Narvaez, 1B Triston Casas, 2B/LF Kristian Campbell, SS Trevor Story, 3B Alex Bregman, DH Rafael Devers, RF Wilyer Abreu, CF Ceddanne Rafaela, LF/CF Jarren Duran, INF David Hamilton, UTIL Romy Gonzalez, OF Rob Refsnyder.

ANALYSIS: The Red Sox officially have 21 position players left in camp but one (Masataka Yoshida) will soon be headed to the IL. With Campbell told he’s on the team, there’s little mystery — barring a last-minute health setback — when it comes to who will be active in Texas.

Casas, Campbell, Story and Bregman will make up the starting infield with Hamilton and Gonzalez almost certainly on the team as backup options. Devers is the everyday DH, which you know if you’ve been following along with the worst kept secret in the history of professional sports. In the outfield, the Red Sox expect a starting trio of (left-to-right) Duran, Rafaela and Abreu; Refsnyder is once again a depth option. Wong and Narvaez will be the two catchers to start.

The only way the current baker’s dozen of projected position players changes is if someone gets hurt over the next few days or someone who is behind the rest of the group (like Abreu or Gonzalez) suffers a setback. In that case, the Red Sox might turn to someone like Nick Sogard or non-roster Abraham Toro. In any case, there are moves to be made (including seven official cuts).

The Red Sox told spring star Trayce Thompson that he’s headed to Worcester on Sunday, according to a source, and others will soon join him. Top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, as anticipated, are expected to join the WooSox to start. Depth options Sogard (who is on the 40-man), Toro and Nate Eaton appear ticketed for Worcester, too, even if news of their demotions hasn’t gone public yet. Boston is awaiting for official word that veteran catcher Seby Zavala will be reporting to Triple-A. The club told Zavala he won’t make the team over the weekend but he exercised an upward mobility clause that allows any team to take him if they can guarantee a big league roster spot. At this time, the expectation is that he’ll go to Worcester.

40-MAN MOVES

The Red Sox currently have a full 40-man roster with one player (Sandoval) already on the 60-day injured list. They may need to do some maneuvering in the next couple days to get the 40-man set before Texas.

Campbell is not currently on the 40-man roster and needs to be added. If Newcomb makes the team, as expected, he will need to be, too. The Red Sox can easily clear two spots by moving two injured pitchers (Murphy and Penrod) to the 60-day IL in the coming days. In this case, they probably won’t have to designate anyone for assignment.

If the Sox make a waiver claim or add a surprise candidate like Toro or Eaton to the roster, they’ll have to lop someone off. In a much improved 40-man group, the top DFA candidates — and this will be important once the season starts and players like Anthony and Mayer start pushing for spots — appear to be pitcher Josh Winckowski, catcher Blake Sabol and Sogard.
