Patrick Mahomes Says His Ankle Injury Late in Chiefs Game Was ‘Scary’: ‘You Always Fear the Worst’

Patrick Mahomes is one “tough kid”!

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback suffered an injury — and a scare — during the fourth quarter of Monday Night Football on Nov.4, when he rolled his left ankle.

“Definitely scary. I think it hurt more just because it’s the same ankle I rolled last week, so it scared me a little bit,” Mahomes said after the overtime thriller in which the Chiefs hung on to their undefeated record. “When you don’t know exactly what happens and you get that sharp pain, you always fear the worst.”

Mahomes had just thrown a 7-yard touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine when he seemingly slipped on the turf and then went down, holding his head in his hands and cradling his ankle.

The reigning Super Bowl MVP, 29, was helped off the field and he entered the medical tent for evaluation.

“I was obviously running for the goal line and was kind of committed to running the football and at the last second [passed to] Samaje, and so I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit,’” Mahomes later explained.

“You feel the pain, and that scares you. I’ve dealt with ankles before, but I just kind of laid there, and as time went on, the pain subsided. I just kind of got back to it and got back moving again and felt comfortable going out there,” he said.

After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had his own take on his quarterback’s toughness.

“I wasn’t sure exactly where he was going to be with it, but he might have the loosest ankles in America,” Reid told reporters. “It’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things and then he’s mentally tough on top of that.”

Reid added, “Yeah, he’s (Patrick Mahomes) a competitor. I told him I was going to take him out and he about wanted to fight me so, he’s a tough kid.”

Following the 30-24 win against the Bucs, the Chiefs have an 8-0 record. The team will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 10.
