Trade Rumors: Lakers Predicted to Trade For Former Luka Doncic Teammate This Summer

In this story:

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to push forward this season as they search for another run at a championship. With star duo Luka Doncic and LeBron James leading the way, Los Angeles does feel confident in their chances this season.

However, there is one glaring weakness within the roster for the Lakers. That would be in the frontcourt as they are fairly thin.

After trading away star big man Anthony Davis, Los Angeles has been tinkering with different lineups to navigate their lack of a true starting center. Big man Jaxson Hayes has done well but the Lakers may need more if they want to win.

However, they likely won’t be able to address this until the offseason. However, one insider believes that the team could target a former teammate of Doncic to fill the hole.

Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report has listed Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford as a possible trade target of the Lakers. Gafford and Doncic thrived together in Dallas and could give the Lakers exactly what they are missing.

“The Lakers already landed a dream target in Luka Dončić, but the franchise is greedy. If Antetokounmpo demands out, a combination of salaries, talent and picks could get him to Los Angeles. It’s a stretch, but it’d be remiss to leave him out if this is a team’s wish list. Otherwise, LA is less likely to send out key players like Reaves, Hachimura, etc. Instead, look for the franchise to target a center with Knecht as bait—similar to the failed Mark Williams deal with the Charlotte Hornets (the Lakers didn’t clear Williams’ physical)”

Landing Gafford won’t be easy as he is a key piece to what the Mavericks do. But Dallas did test the waters of a Gafford trade before the deadline this year so there could be an opening.

Doncic is very familiar with Gafford and he is the perfect center for this Lakers team. The big man has defend well while providing decent offensive output to help round things out.

If the Lakers are serious about winning, they will heavily look into what it would take to land Gafford from Dallas this summer. This team will be going after a center this offseason and Gafford could be the perfect piece around the star players.
