Josh Giddey has been the Chicago Bulls’ best player since Zach LaVine was traded. In the nine games that he has featured in since the All-Star break, he has averaged 23.1 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game while shooting a remarkable 52.2% from the field and 52.5% from beyond the arc.
The Bulls will have to make a contract decision regarding Giddey soon and based on his recent form, they must do everything possible to extend his time in Chicago.
That being said, the Bulls know better than most how damaging it can be to hand out a bg-money, long-term contract based on a good patch of form. So, they must be careful with the Giddey situation for sure.
What kind of a deal would they have to give Giddey? Well, it might be around the $30 million per year mark that has been floating around since the summer.
During an appearance on Nothing But Net, Brian Windhorst said about Giddey’s next contract: “The going rate for a starting point guard in the NBA is around $30 million. He is their starter. Now, if you look at a guy like Immanuel Quickley, he got five years and $162 million. That’s about $32 million a year, a year ago. I’m sure Josh Giddey is hoping for something like that. He’s not quite the scorer or the defender Quickley is, so maybe slightly less.”

A lot will depend on how the Bulls view Giddey. Is he their point guard of the future? If that is the case then handing him a deal around that level would not be a bad idea at all.
The Bulls did trade Alex Caruso for Giddey. So, one would think that they do have long-term plans for him.
It is also worth pointing out that the Bulls did extend Lonzo Ball recently, but considering his injury history, it is hard to imagine that he will be a starter anywhere moving forward. A high IQ role player might be his ceiling in the NBA.
