Andrea Berta has expressed to Arsenal his strong interest in acquiring the £63 million striker.
In discussions regarding his potential role as Arsenal’s new sporting director, Berta has made it clear that he holds a high regard for Matheus Cunha, the former Atletico Madrid forward, as reported exclusively by TBR Football.
Arsenal has maintained a long-term interest in Cunha, who has netted 15 goals in 29 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season.
Wolves brought the Brazilian striker on board from Atletico in 2023, a club Berta was overseeing at that time.
Berta originally signed Cunha for Atletico from Hertha Berlin in 2021, where he managed to score only seven goals in 54 matches for the Spanish team.
Now, there is a possibility that the Brazilian could reunite with Berta at the Emirates Stadium if the Italian’s aspirations come to fruition.
Berta’s admiration for Wolves striker Matheus Cunha is well-known. TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, reports that Berta has always believed in Cunha since the moment he first signed him.
Cunha has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time and continues to be a viable option for the Gunners.
As Berta prepares to join Arsenal, he has reiterated his appreciation for Cunha, indicating that he shares a similar vision with the current leadership in north London.
The incoming sporting director has a significant agenda ahead, with the recruitment of a new forward being a top priority.
Mikel Arteta’s squad could potentially be bolstered by the addition of two new forwards if the club opts for both a central striker and a wide player.
Additionally, Berta will prioritize finalizing the club’s pursuit of Martin Zubimendi, which will remain unaffected by his arrival.
Cunha’s goal-scoring record has been on the rise, although he has not always been a prolific scorer in previous clubs, partly due to his versatility, as he has often been deployed in wide positions or as a number 10.
The Brazilian is currently demonstrating his ability to score consistently for Wolves, regardless of the attacking position he occupies.
Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, believes that Cunha has the potential to perform at the highest level, a sentiment echoed by Berta.
Cunha recently netted a goal against Liverpool at Anfield, a milestone that Arsenal hopes to replicate during their upcoming match in Merseyside later this season.
If Berta’s aspirations come to fruition, Arsenal would significantly enhance their attacking threat next season with Cunha in their lineup.
It is important to note that Cunha has a £63 million release clause following his recent contract extension with Wolves.
