Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has delivered an update on the fitness of Lucas Bergvall, who was forced to leave the pitch with an injury during Spurs’ 3-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar. The Swedish midfielder, who has been in fine form for the club in recent months, had to be substituted in the latter stages of the game, raising concerns among the Tottenham fanbase.
A Dominant Spurs Display with One Concerning Moment
It was an almost perfect evening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Postecoglou’s side, as they secured their place in the final eight of the competition with a commanding performance. Wilson Odobert stole the show with a brace, while James Maddison added another with a brilliant finish to ensure Spurs comfortably progressed at the expense of their Dutch opponents.
However, the one blemish in an otherwise dominant performance came in the 67th minute, when a miscommunication between Bergvall and Odobert gifted AZ Alkmaar a way back into the game. Despite that brief lapse in concentration, Bergvall had been instrumental in Tottenham’s midfield, dictating play and helping his team control possession. Unfortunately, the 19-year-old’s evening was cut short when he had to be withdrawn in the 85th minute, with Ben Davies coming on to help see out the victory.
Postecoglou Eases Injury Fears Over Bergvall
After the match, Postecoglou addressed concerns about Bergvall’s injury, reassuring fans that there is no serious issue. The Australian coach acknowledged that he has been mindful of the teenager’s workload, having given him a rest in the previous Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
Bergvall has emerged as one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers in recent months, and given his growing importance to the team, supporters were understandably anxious about his condition. Fortunately, Postecoglou’s latest comments should provide a sense of relief.
When asked about Tottenham’s injury situation following the Alkmaar match, Postecoglou confirmed that all players had come through the game unscathed, which includes Bergvall.
“(It’s looking) pretty good. (There’s) nothing (to report) from last night. Everyone got through it well,” Postecoglou told Spurs’ official media team, indicating that there are no fresh injury concerns heading into the weekend.
Squad Updates: Returns and Absentees for Fulham Clash
In addition to the positive news regarding Bergvall, Postecoglou provided further updates on the squad’s availability ahead of Tottenham’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Fulham.
Timo Werner and Sergio Reguilon are both back in contention, giving Spurs a boost in attack and defense, while Rodrigo Bentancur has completed his suspension and is once again available for selection. The Uruguayan midfielder is expected to slot straight back into the starting XI after missing the Alkmaar game.
However, the Lilywhites will still be without Kevin Danso, Dejan Kulusevski, and Richarlison for the trip to Craven Cottage. Postecoglou previously stated that both Danso and Richarlison are expected to return after the international break, meaning Spurs will have to cope without them for at least one more match.
With key players returning and no new injury setbacks, Tottenham head into their next fixture in strong shape as they continue to push forward in both domestic and European competitions.
