Wednesday's Red Sox spring training report: Rookie Marcelo shows fight

SCORE: Red Sox 6, Twins 5

RECORD: 9-7-1

BREAKDOWN: Marcelo Mayer put together an impressive at-bat against hard-throwing Jhoan Duran during the bottom of the seventh inning, fouling off pitches and working the count to 3-and-2. Recognizing he couldn’t blow his 100-miles-per-hour fastball past Mayer, Duran went to a breaking ball, catching Mayer out in front for the strikeout.

NEXT: The Red Sox travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla., for their matchup against the Mets. Sean Newcomb will start for the Sox against David Peterson.
