Bulls can breathe a sigh of relief following Josh Giddey injury update

The Chicago Bulls have won three straight contests for the first time in 2025. Led by the backcourt duo of Coby White and Josh Giddey, Chicago has averaged 120.0 points and 27.3 assists while converting 48.7 percent of its field goals over the last three contests.

This three-game win streak comes after an abysmal February that saw the Bulls secure only three victories in the entire month. Chicago went 3-8 in February, also losing the first two contests of March. Subsequent to the two-game losing spell, White dropped 44 points against the Orlando Magic to get the Bulls back in the win column.

Two days later, Giddey recorded his third triple-double of the season in a win against the Miami Heat. Most recently, on March 10, the 6-foot-8 guard scored 29 points, including 21 in the first half, to lead the Bulls to victory against the Indiana Pacers. However, if not for an ankle injury in the fourth quarter, Giddey would have likely surpassed the 30-point barrier for the first time as a Bull.

Josh Giddey’s ankle injury not as severe as initially expected

The 22-year-old guard suffered the injury with less than eight minutes remaining against Indiana. The injury occurred when Giddey drove left, used a spin move to create space, and then came down on Pacers’ Ben Sheppard’s foot as he went up for a floater. Giddey was in obvious pain after the missed shot attempt. He immediately clutched his right ankle before heading straight for the locker room. As he hobbled toward the locker room, he slammed his hand in frustration on a table.

The injury to his right ankle is coincidentally the same one he suffered in the Olympics. Giddey rolled his right ankle against Serbia in the Olympic Semifinal in August. The Aussie later revealed he ruptured a ligament in his ankle, which required two months of rehabilitation. Thus, the frustration following Monday night’s injury was warranted.

Fortunately for Giddey and the Bulls, the injury isn’t as serious as it appeared. After a day with no updates regarding its severity, Giddey spoke to the media on March 12 to expound upon the injury. To begin the interview, he said, “I thought when I did it, it was a lot worse.” Giddey followed that up by saying, “That was probably the most pain I’ve ever had from a rolled ankle.”

Despite how bad it seemed, Giddey has been deemed day-to-day even after leaving the United Center in a walking boot. He lamented that he felt much better the next morning. The former Thunder guard didn’t experience a limp and said he’s “already back on the treadmill.”

The favorable diagnosis is a godsend for both parties. Giddey has been on an absolute tear lately, averaging 23.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, 8.4 assists, and 2.3 three-pointers per game since the All-Star break. He’s also posted a team-high plus-89 plus/minus over his last nine appearances. Chicago has been much better with Giddey on the floor.

Although he won’t suit up when Chicago hosts the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, March 13, there’s a possibility he makes his return ahead of the Bulls’ six-game road trip starting with the Houston Rockets on Saturday, March 15. The Bulls won’t return home until March 27 for a bout with the Los Angeles Lakers.
