Trevor Story was a late scratch from the Red Sox lineup on Tuesday afternoon because of upper-back tightness. Boston labeled the move as more precautionary than anything and expects the veteran shortstop back in the lineup on Wednesday.
“He’s OK,” said Cora. “He was taking grounders Tuesday morning and felt it.”
Marcelo Mayer started in Story’s place, where he went 1-for-1 with a run scored and a strikeout.
Story has been one of the Red Sox’ more productive hitters this spring, hitting .458 (11-for-24) with two homers, four doubles, six RBI, and six strikeouts, with a 1.355 OPS. His best game this spring came in the 20-5 schlacking of the Marlins on March 7, where he belted two homers and drove in three runs.
Over the course of his first three seasons in Boston, Story has missed 298 games and has had four stints on the injured list. There’s nothing to suggest that the athletic infielder will be headed back to the IL, but the optics around another Story injury update are alarming.
The shortstop missed 133 games last year because of a left shoulder injury, which was caused after making a diving attempt to field a ground ball hit by Angels’ Mike Trout. Story worked hard in his rehab and returned to the Sox’ lineup before the season came to a close.
Story’s minor issue on Tuesday doesn’t appear to be anything of concern. He remains focused on one primary goal: remaining healthy to help the team compete this season.
“Yeah, health is the top priority for sure,” said Story while on the Section 10 podcast. “I think just with games on the field, you know, just the volume, if I do put up 155 (games), which is always the goal for me, most of the stats will be there. For me, I really feel like those 18, 19 years, in my mind, that’s what I kind of envision happening.
“You know, so that’s a lot of damage, that’s running the bases, that’s stolen bases. Just kind of like a Jaren Duran type, where you can impact the game offensively in many different ways. You know, taking doubles that should be singles. I know me and him kind of have a gentleman’s bet on that for extra bases. So yeah, we’ll be pushing each other out there.”
A healthy Story is a game changer for the Sox, and he helps lengthen their lineup. He’ll offer Boston another right-handed power bat and Gold Glove defense up the middle.
