NFL free agency is off and running as teams around the league are wheeling and dealing to fill roster spots and improve their chances of competing for a Super Bowl in 2025.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most interesting teams to watch, having already pulled off a series of moves in the hopes of filling some key holes.

Signing former San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell turned some heads, and how the Chiefs approach the backfield is a major topic among fans.

As it turns out, Kansas City was just given another opportunity to poach a 49ers player who was just released.

Running back Carson Steele won the Kingdom over in his rookie campaign though saw his effectiveness and playing time wane over the season. Based on a surprise cut, the Chiefs now have an ideal player to replace him available.

Chiefs Must Sign Former 49ers FB Kyle Juszczyk to Replace Carson Steele

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers released 12-year veteran Kyle Juszczyk on Monday. The versatile fullback is capable of playing all over the offense, serving as a Swiss Army knife for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

Steele was listed as a fullback and rushed the ball 56 times for 183 yards during the regular season.

He had a fumbling issue, however, and it’s understandably difficult for the coaching staff to trust his ball security and ability to break big gains.

Juszczyk is a nine-time Pro Bowler and has been adamant about his desire to keep playing, making him a logical target as the Chiefs look to improve the backfield.

Kansas City is obviously quite familiar with Juszczyk as well.

He began his career with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the 49ers, having played against the Chiefs in two Super Bowls and a number of other marquee games. He’s an excellent blocker, impressive receiver and even a decent runner, theoretically giving Andy Reid a variety of ways to deploy him.

At the least, it’s clear that Juszczyk would be an improvement over Steele. Finding a way to get better production out of the backfield is a priority, particularly if Kareem Hunt isn’t re-signed.

Regardless, Juszczyk is someone that Kansas City needs to target in order to maximize their chances to hoist another Lombardi Trophy.
