Manchester United icon Nani has called on his former club to equip new manager Ruben Amorim with two crucial elements following his appointment as Erik ten Hag’s successor.
Amorim, who has been managing Sporting CP in Portugal, will officially take charge during the November international break. This move marks his first managerial role outside of his home country, where he has achieved significant success, securing five trophies for Sporting, including a Liga Portugal title in his debut season.
Nani, who briefly shared the pitch with Amorim for the Portuguese national team, is confident that Amorim possesses the qualities needed to make a positive impact at Old Trafford. Yet, he stressed that the club must support him with “patience” and “top-tier players” to foster success. “He’s accomplished remarkable things at Sporting,” Nani commented after Estrela da Amadora’s recent 5-1 defeat to Sporting. “If given patience and the right squad, he can thrive at United, one of the world’s most prestigious clubs.”
During Ten Hag’s time as manager, United spent around £600 million on 21 new signings and captured the Carabao Cup and FA Cup trophies. However, they ultimately ended the 2023/2024 Premier League season in a disappointing eighth place.
Amorim, meanwhile, has ruled out bringing in any current Sporting players, stating, “With [Viktor] Gyokeres valued at €100 million (£84m), I won’t be signing any Sporting players this January.”
