Recently, the Los Angeles Dodgers decided to halt Shohei Ohtani’s throwing program as he continues to recover from left shoulder surgery.
Although Ohtani has participated in three throwing sessions this spring, he will not face hitters until after the team returns from Japan.
This decision comes as the team prepares for its season-opening series in Tokyo on March 18, where Ohtani is expected to play as a designated hitter.
Manager Dave Roberts has ruled out the possibility of Ohtani pitching in this series but hopes he will return to the mound soon.
Ohtani made an impressive spring debut recently, hitting a home run in his first at-bat since recovering from shoulder surgery.
He missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery but had a standout 2023 season, leading the National League with 54 home runs and 130 RBIs.
He also achieved 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season, earning his third MVP award.
Pausing Ohtani’s throwing program ensures he has sufficient time for a full recovery before returning to the mound while allowing him to focus on contributing as a designated hitter in the early part of the season.
