The Chiefs have multiple glaring holes on their roster which were exposed during the Super Bowl loss.

However, the team doesn’t have the means to fill many of those holes due to the financial situation they are in.

The Chiefs already had very limited cap space this offseason, but now they are actually in the negative.

Kansas City will need to find a way to clear over $15 million in cap space before they can make any moves in free agency.

This is because the team decided to use the franchise tag on offensive guard Trey Smith.

Smith is one of the best up and coming guards in the NFL, and was set to leave the Chiefs in free agency.

Instead of letting him walk or inking him to a long-term deal, the Chiefs used the franchise tag to keep him on the team for one more season.

That tag cost $22 million though, and some fans are concerned with other position groups on the team.

One fan specifically pointed out the wide receiver group that the Chiefs currently have on the roster.

Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Marquise Brown are who make up that group.

Rice only had 288 yards in his sophomore season due to an injury early in the year.

Xavier Worthy had a decent rookie season with 638 yards and six touchdowns.

Brown only had 91 yards an no touchdowns after missing all but two games during the season.

Clearly the wide receiver group on the Chiefs has some big question marks.

The worst thing about this is that the Chiefs would be able to fix this problem if they had any money.

NFL important dates 2025 season

March 12 – Free Agency begins

April 24-26 – NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin

September 4 – 2025 season opener (TBC vs Eagles)

November 27 – Thanksgiving Day triple header

January 4, 2026 – End of regular-season

February 8, 2026 – Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California

There are multiple great wide receivers hitting free agency this year, but Kansas City likely can’t afford any of them.

Tee Higgins is the best wide receiver hitting the market during the offseason.

He is only 26 years old and has over 4,500 yards and 34 touchdowns in his five-year career.

The Cincinnati Bengals product will likely net a contract close to 30 million though, which the Chiefs don’t have anywhere close to.

They would have to find $45 million in cap space in order to pay a player like Higgins.
