Yeah, we’re not sure how credible this is or not.
It’s that time of the NFL offseason where the rumor mill is churning at a brisk pace, and at times, it can be difficult to surmise whether or not something is entirely credible.
We do our best to stay away from the inane, but the latest report to surface comes from Corbin K. Smith who used to cover the Seattle Seahawks for Sports Illustrated and now has his own endeavor called Emerald City Spectrum.
We’ll let you decide just how seriously you want to take the rumor, but we can at least pass along the latest word that has the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills both reportedly “monitoring” the trade winds around wide receiver D.K. Metcalf these days.
What makes this more interesting at this stage for Chiefs Kingdom is that K.C. has been “in the mix” for Metcalf before, so given the front office’s maintains consistent interest in the player, the news feels a bit more plausible.
Remember it was 2022, in the wake of the Tyreek Hill deal, that the Chiefs were calling teams to check in on various receiving options—including Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf of the Seahawks.
Perhaps those reports were false as well, but the rumored ties have been in place for some time and the fact that the Chiefs could circle back around at this stage of Metcalf’s career is at least worth mentioning.
Metcalf is only 27 years old and has a proven track record as a dangerous volume target for the Seahawks.
He had 66 catches for 992 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2024, and his average season features 73 catches for 1,054 yards and 8 scores. Certainly, many teams would be interested in adding Metcalf at this stage of his career if the price was right.
The complicating aspect here is the nearly $32 million cap hit due Metcalf this season.
Any acquisition would certainly have to include a new long-term extension for Metcalf that would carry him through his final multi-year deal in the NFL (most likely).
Perhaps with Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice on rookie deals and Travis Kelce likely on his farewell tour in 2025, the Chiefs might be amenable to absorbing such a cost.
In addition to the Bills and Chiefs linked in this latest rumor, the Chargers were predicted to be the team to trade for Metcalf by ESPN earlier this offseason and it’s not hard to find several other teams mentioned in general searches on social media.
In other words, the idea of teams going all-in for Metcalf is not a far-fetched one.
