CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – Fans of both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals in the Heartland are cheering efforts by Missouri lawmakers to keep both teams in the Show-Me State.
Both franchises, the Chiefs and Royals, are exploring options for new stadiums.
This comes after voters in Jackson County voted down a sales tax that would have paid for new stadiums.
Governor Laura Kelly signed the STAR Bonds bill to attract a professional sports team using the Sales Tax and Revenue Bonds to finance a major development such as a new stadium or practice facility.
We caught up with a few local Chiefs fans about their efforts to keep the Chiefs in Missouri.
“They’ve been here since the 1960s; there’s no reason to leave. Arrowhead’s one of the best places to play in the NFL, the atmosphere is unmatchable anywhere else. I’d be really upset if they let the state go,” said Chiefs fan John Rice.
“We already lost one football team with the Rams and everything, and I am a pretty passionate Chiefs fan. If they left, I don’t know. Kansas City or Kansas doesn’t really deserve that, I feel. We deserve them more,” said Chiefs fan Jacey Young.
Other locals say while they aren’t Chiefs fans, they think it would benefit Missouri for both teams to stay.
As the city, county, and state continue to work to incentivize keeping both the Chiefs and Royals in Missouri, some voters are against using tax money to keep the teams.
