Any fans who wanted to see Trey Smith join the Seahawks in free agency just got some bad news.
With the official start of NFL free agency only two weeks away, there’s still a window for teams to franchise tag impending unrestricted free agents, and the dethroned Super Bowl champions intend to use that tag.
ESPN reported on Thursday that the Kansas City Chiefs intend to use the franchise tag on right guard Trey Smith, the consensus top FA offensive lineman.
The 25-year-old is coming off his first Pro Bowl season after making the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2021.
Assuming the Chiefs use the non-exclusive franchise tag, Smith would be on a one-year contract worth $23.4 million for the 2025 season. The Chiefs’ reported plan is to use the tag but still work out a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline.
It was always unlikely that the Seattle Seahawks would ever sign Smith had he hit the free agency market, but now it’s a certainty he won’t be available.
If by any chance Smith doesn’t sign the franchise tag deal and is on a non-exclusive tag, any team who wants to acquire him would have to fork over a pair of first-round picks.
I think we can safely rule out the Seahawks (and frankly, the rest of the NFL) on that front.
For a young option at guard, the next highest profile FA would be Teven Jenkins of the Chicago Bears, who’s 26 years old and was one of the few bright spots on Chicago’s offense, let alone offensive line.
The Indianapolis Colts’ Will Fries could be another possibility, keeping in mind he suffered a season-ending fractured tibia early last season.
But for the few who dared to dream of Trey Smith in a Seahawks uniform, the dream is pretty much over.
