Oh … we’re sorry … you thought the cascading Giancarlo Stanton injury updates were enough drama to deal with? Well, the situation just gained another layer of complexity at spring training. New York Yankees fans aren’t going to be pleased.
On Sunday night we learned Stanton was headed back to New York to undergo testing on his elbows to determine the severity of his injuries — to which many responded “why now?”. The Yankees knew about his injury since last season, it worsened over the last few months, and they decided to deal with it at spring training?
Well, apparently that’s not even the truth? According to Bryan Hoch, who is reporting from Tampa, Aaron Boone told reporters that Stanton is indeed in New York, but his “situation is personal in nature, and I’m going to leave it at that for now.”
So, the Yankees first lied by withholding information about Stanton’s injury, and then they lied again by leaking incorrect/incomplete information to the media on Sunday about his trip back to New York? Why does this have unnecessary layers of complexity to it?
Whatever the case, Yankees fans are wishing the best for Stanton, who has enduring a lot during his time in the Bronx. He just came off a legacy-cementing playoff run, too, so the timing of all this is extremely unfortunate.
Speaking in Fort Myers, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Giancarlo Stanton is in New York, but his situation is “personal in nature, and I’m going to leave it at that for now. That’s all I can comment on that.”

The media has barely had any time to focus on any positives at spring training. Will Warren looked great in his debut. Paul Goldschmidt hit an RBI double in his first at-bat as a Yankee. Spencer Jones hit a home run with a new-look batting stance. Cody Bellinger already has two hits. Pitchers Sean Boyle and Michael Arias looked good in their debuts, too.
But camp got kicked off with the Marcus Stroman trade rumor drama, and it hasn’t gotten any better. Jasson Dominguez made poor plays in left field all weekend. Just last week, DJ LeMahieu looked terrible in practice and Austin Wells “wasn’t ready to swing,” but also wasn’t injured. Chase Hampton is undergoing Tommy John surgery. Clarke Schmidt’s back is bothering him. Trent Grisham suffered an offseason hamstring injury. Clayton Beeter and Jake Cousins are both battling injuries. Jonathan Loaisiga is starting the year on the 60-day injured list.
Nobody foresaw a personal issue arising with Stanton in conjunction with the double elbow injuries. It’s yet another storyline that’s making it hard for Yankees fans to focus on a successful 2025 revenge tour, but we’ll wait and keep our fingers crossed for better news regarding the big man.
