Reports indicated that the Los Angeles Dodgers were interested in trading for Nolan Arenado during the winter.
Arenado, a veteran who’s been struggling a bit over the past few years, would be a decent pickup.
However, if the Dodgers were to trade for him, it isn’t guaranteed that he’d be the perfect player for them at this stage of his career.
The Dodgers have shown the willingness to do whatever it takes to win a World Series. If a player becomes available on the trade market they want, it’s only logical to think the Dodgers might pursue them.
That could be said for Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers, who expressed his feelings about potentially being used as a DH instead of playing third base with Alex Bregman now in the mix. Zachary D.
Rymer of Bleacher Report put together trade packages for the Red Sox that involved Devers, including one with the Dodgers. His proposal with the Dodgers would move Max Muncy, Chris Taylor, Bobby Miller, and Alex Freeland.
“The Dodgers already have an absurd $389 million payroll, but this deal would be pretty much neutral in terms of average annual value. Devers’ AAV is $29 million, with Muncy and Taylor adding up to an AAV of $27 million.
Muncy is the only one of these players who figures to play a prominent role for the Dodgers in 2025, and methinks they would rather have Devers if it was a simple either/or question,” Rymer wrote.
From the Dodgers’ perspective, this would be the perfect deal to make. Devers is clearly an upgrade over the four players mentioned, but the Red Sox would still have to take the deal.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t make much sense for the Red Sox to take these players unless they want to save money long-term.
But imagine if it happened? Baseball fans wouldn’t be too happy with anyone involved.
