REPORT: Kansas City Chiefs to make $38 million Patrick Mahomes decision which will have major effect on Travis Kelce’s future

Kelce won’t be the only star’s future to keep an eye on

THE Kansas City Chiefs are expected to make a big decision concerning Patrick Mahomes – and Travis Kelce’s future could be impacted as a result.

The Chiefs are currently tight with money after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59 and looking ahead to the 2025 season.

The Chiefs are $1 million over the 2025 salary cap as free agency approaches in less than a month, on March 12.

Kansas City will have 20 unrestricted free agents to decide on whether to pay or not, and they’ll also have to wait and see if Travis Kelce will retire, or stay in the league.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs can find a way to create cap space by modifying the $66.2 million cap hit of the three-time Super Bowl MVP Mahomes.

The team could convert $47.7 million of Mahomes’ money into a restructuring bonus.

That payment can be spread out over the next five seasons.

So his 2025 salary will go down to just $11.8 million and, after bonuses, his cap hit will only be $28 million.

As a result, the Chiefs will receive close to $39 million in cap space.

Kelce will be a massive name that could be affected by the potential Mahomes’ restructuring move.

If the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end Kelce calls it quits or if the Chiefs trade or cut him, the team will save $17.25 million.

On March 14, Kelce is due an $11.5 million roster bonus.

That’s the same day in which the Chiefs have reportedly set a deadline for Kelce to decide whether he will return or leave the sport.

Kansas City, who failed to achieve the three-peat, can look to continue their Super Bowl window and create more cap flexibility for the next campaign in other ways.

The franchise can save $20.6 million by restructuring star defensive tackle Chris Jones’ contract.

They can also create $22.07 million in cap space by extending the six-time Pro Bowler.

The Chiefs can also save $15.06 million if they extend offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor.

The team can also save $9.4 million by restructuring Taylor’s deal.

Andy Reid’s squad can save $16 million by releasing or trading two-time First-Team All-Pro Joe Thuney or save $11.7 by extending the 32-year-old.

And they can receive a combined $13 million in cap space by trading linebacker Drue Tranquill and defensive lineman Mike Danna after June 1.
