There had been rumors flying for a couple of weeks that the Cubs were interested in signing free agent infielder Justin Turner.

Now, per Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, they are about to do so:

The Chicago Cubs are close to an agreement with Justin Turner, a source briefed on the negotiations told The Athletic. Turner, 40, is a highly accomplished hitter who wants to play in Chicago and will bring extensive playoff experience to the club.

Turner has indeed participated in nine postseasons, all for the Dodgers, and overall in 86 postseason games has batted .270/.370/.460 (85-for-315) with 13 home runs.

Last year Turner batted .259/.354/.383 in 119 games with 11 home runs, split between the Blue Jays and Mariners. He turned 40 in November.

For anyone who thinks Turner might play third base for the Cubs, I think you need to drop that idea. He played there only six times (four starts) in 2024 and is likely not mobile enough to do so now, except on a VERY occasional basis.

Most likely, he will be a backup to Michael Busch at first base and for Seiya Suzuki at DH, or if Kyle Tucker needs a day off in RF, Turner could DH and Suzuki play RF.

Personally, I’m not in favor of this signing, but perhaps it will work out all right. There’s been no official announcement from the team on the signing, and no word on who might go off the 40-man roster to make room.

When there’s more info I will update this post.
