Raheem Sterling’s disappointing display was perhaps Arsenal’s one and only reason to be concerned after their 2-0 victory against Leicester City.

The four-time Premier League winner struggled to beat his man, stay onside and impact proceedings whatsoever against Leicester City.

With Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side languishing in 19th place in the Premier League, even Raheem Sterling may have felt upon discovering he was starting that the game would be the perfect way for him to up his confidence levels.

However, that was simply not the case as Sterling well and truly looks a shadow of his former self.

Gary Neville feels Sterling has lost his pace but the England international’s dribbling and general spatial awareness was alarmingly poor as well — two traits that defined some of the best years of his career.

Mikel Arteta had no choice but to take the 30-year-old off as he was virtually a non-factor on the pitch.

Ian Wright says its “sad” watching Raheem Sterling after Arsenal’s 2-0 win vs Leicester City
With Mikel Merino proving his worth as a makeshift striker, perhaps the midfielder could take Sterling’s place in Arsenal’s front three.

The Chelsea loanee will be hoping that Mikel Arteta persists with him in the side as he will be frustrated by his own performance.

Ian Wright chimed in on Sterling’s display and in his view, it was a sad sight witnessing a player who was once world-class play as poorly as he did against Leicester.

Wright told Premier League Productions: “It’s a sad watch, it’s been a sad time to watch Raheem [Sterling] in this Arsenal period because of what he’s done, what he’s achieved and to come to Arsenal at a time where it is a great opportunity for him to show people I’ve still got something left.”

“For some reason unfortunately, he can’t seem to find a spark to get him going and you saw it again today, there’s hesitancy in his game, there’s a little bit of apprehension. You know, it just feels like it’s not quite happening for him and it’s sad to see.”

Ian Wright also stated that unless Sterling proves he remains a top player at Arsenal on loan, the Kingston-born winger’s potential suitors in the future might feel he no longer has the quality to play at the highest level.

“The thing is as well Mike [Michael Owen], if it continues in the way we’re seeing him play at the moment, then you think, who are going to be his suitors after this? This is a level he’s got to, even though it’s a loan where if you could prove it here, Arsenal may keep you, you may go again at this level but it’d very difficult to see him at this level if he carries on like this.”

Arsenal decided not to cancel Sterling’s loan deal and persisted with him after he picked up a knee injury in December. But the Gunners’ show of faith has not done much to result in an upturn in his performances, with Ian Wright demanding Sterling to up his game previously as well.

Sterling completed zero dribbles during Leicester City vs Arsenal
The statistics from Arsenal’s latest victory do not do any favours for the decorated goalscorer.

Sterling completed no dribbles, which is a particularly alarming statistic for a player who built a reputation for taking on defenders.

Furthermore, the Englishman created just one chance, was caught offside twice, delivers no accurate crossed, lost five out of six duels and had little to no threat in the final third.

Whether Mikel Arteta has had enough and drops Sterling ahead of Arsenal’s next game against West Ham is now the question.
