BREAKING: Celtics’ duo Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown are two OGs winning the NBA All-Star Game

Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown win the first NBA All-Star Game tournament - Yahoo Sports

SAN FRANCISCO – Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown were OGs for a day Sunday at Chase Center, joining some of the game’s all-time greats as their team won this All-Star Tournament that may or may not be a one-time experiment.

Tatum scored a team-high 15 of the OGs 42 points but lost out on the MVP award to hometown favorite Stephen Curry, who scored 12, including a 39-foot 3-pointer. Jaylen Brown scored 4 points in the final and 8 in the semifinal win over Candace’s Rising Stars.

What the two Celtics agreed on was how much that 15-minute delay in between the final game between Shaq’s OGs and Chuck’s Global Stars stymied momentum or flow the game was generating. With the OGs up 11-1, there was a television timeout after play stoppage and that turned into a lengthy tribute to the Turner Network “Inside the NBA” team of Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson.

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.

The quartet was presented with signed jerseys from every All-Star and fishing equipment as a recognition for their popular “Gone Fishin’ ” segment when they bid adieu to teams that were eliminated from the playoffs.

While the ceremony was well deserved, the delay was uncomfortable for some players, who feared they would cool off or lose rhythm, and that’s exactly what happened. When play continued, the players jogged and used several possessions to work themselves back into game speed.

“The format was cool,” Tatum said. “I think the toughest part, they stopped the game to do the presentation while we were kind of halfway through it. We were sitting down for 20 minutes, whatever it was. It was kind of tough to get back into the game after that. But besides that, I thought it was cool. First two games were pretty competitive. But whatever. So if they could just find a way to not have that long intermission in between the games or during the game, I think it would be a lot better.”

Brown, who was re-elected as a vice president of the NBA Players Association, also applauded the new format but had a real issue with the mid-game break.

“It was different, I think trying something different to see what kind of works and sticks,” he said. “So I guess they’ll look at it and see what it was before. I guess we’ll see what we’ll do for next year. I don’t have any thoughts on it.”

When asked if he knew TNT would take a 15-minutes in-game break, Brown said: “I didn’t. I don’t know if the other guys knew. I didn’t know. That kind of like took the gas out of everything for a little bit but I know we’re just trying to be great professionals, trying to do different things and explore, generate viewership and tonight was us trying to do something different.”

Brown admitted that players were wary of injury after play resumed.

“You could say that,” he said. “I would say that’s not ideal to stop like that if you want guys to play and be physical and play harder. But guys were still out there having fun, all the OGs, you know, team old knees and old backs, we came out on top. I don’t think anybody else should have had any excuses but it’s definitely not ideal.”

Gasper: All-out on All-Star games

Celtics remain a potential future host

According to a league source, Boston’s bid for an All-Star Game is still a possibility despite the team being up for sale. The Celtics are still interested in returning the game to Boston for the first time since 1964 but their bid had been put on hold as the league determines other scheduling commitments.

The Wyc Grousbeck-led team told the Globe last year that it was interesting in hosting an All-Star Game and commissioner Adam Silver said Boston would be an ideal candidate, especially with the refurbishing of TD Garden and the construction of additional hotels over the past several years.

Brown was asked whether he would like an All-Star Game in Boston, being a senior member of the Celtics.

“That would be great,” he said. “That would be awesome. I think the city is equipped for it. I think we’ve got the craziest fans in the world in Boston. So I’m sure that they would enjoy it. It kind of seems like it was a little empty in here (Chase Center) tonight. I don’t think in Boston that would happen.

“So yeah, if we bring the All-Star Game to Boston I would love to be there and I would love to participate. I think that would be great for the game.”

Is anyone afraid of the Celtics?
