SHINE!! Tyler Herro wins NBA 3-Point Contest

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro became the third former Kentucky player to win the NBA 3-Point Contest at NBA All-Star Weekend in the Bay Area Saturday night.

Herro, who joins fellow former Wildcats Devin Booker (2018) and Karl-Anthony Towns (2022) as past winners, edged two-time defending champion Damian Lillard (Milwaukee Bucks) 19-18 in the first round and Buddy Hield (Golden State Warriors) in the final round.

“I feel like a lot of great shooters, a lot of great players, some of the greats to play this game have won this this competition,” Herro said afterward. “Just happy to put my name in the history books for All-Star Weekend.”

Making his first NBA All-Star appearance in his sixth year in the league, Herro is career-highs in points (23.9), rebounds (5.5), and assists (5.5) per game while shooting a career-best 46.5% from the floor while starting all 51 games for the Heat this season. Over his 6-year NBA career, Herro is a 38% 3-point shooter.

A total of nine former Wildcats were set to participate across five events over NBA All-Star Weekend in the Bay Area and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder), Anthony Davis (Dallas Mavericks), and Towns (New York Knicks) were chosen to join Herro in the All-Star Game.

Prior to the start of the 2024-25 season, Herro was ranked as the No. 76 player in the NBA by ESPN, up three spots from the previous season.

In 2022, Herro was named Kia NBA Sixth Man of the Year, receiving 488 points and 96 of 100 first-place votes, after averaging 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting a career-high 39.9% from beyond the arc.

In six NBA seasons, Herro holds career averages of 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 46.5% overall, 38.4% from 3, and 86.8% from the free throw line.

During his lone season at Kentucky in 2018-19, Herro was named SEC Newcomer of the Year after finishing second on the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game. His 60 three-pointers are the eighth-most ever by a freshman in school history. None were bigger than his late triple with 24 seconds left help give Kentucky a 62-58 win over Houston in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, after which he was named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team before going on to become the No. 13 overall pick of the Miami Heat in the 2019 NBA Draft.

A one-time Wisconsin commit, Herro was rated as a 4-star prospect and ranked as the No. 37 overall prospect in the 2018 class according to the industry average 247Sports Composite. As a senior at Whitnall High School in Milwaukee, Herro was named First Team All-State after averaging 32.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 3.3 steals per game. For his career, Herro scored more than 2,000 career points.
