‘When I do get an opportunity on this level, I’ll be ready’

When the Boston Celtics had head coach Joe Mazzulla hand-select members of his coaching staff two offseasons ago, Sam Cassell was chosen.
Cassell, a three-time NBA champion and former All-Star player (2004), amassed 15 years of coaching experience with the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers before returning to Boston. Well-respected in the league, Cassell has also been considered for various roles besides an assistant position with the Celtics, including the head coach’s seat for the Los Angeles Lakers last year.
That interest level in appointing Cassell the clipboard chief hasn’t dried out, even during Boston’s championship repeat defense.
The Florida State Seminoles, Cassell’s alma matter, are expected to keep the 55-year-old in “serious consideration” for their head coaching gig, per Heavy.com’s Steve Bullpett. Cassell played four seasons for the Seminoles before going 24th overall in the first round of the 1993 NBA draft to the Houston Rockets.
“Listen, man, I have a great life. I’m associate head coach of the Boston Celtics. It’s good livin’ right here,” Cassell told Bullpett. “When I do get an opportunity on this level, I’ll be ready. I can guarantee that. I am ready. Simple”
Cassell added before Wednesday night’s Celtics-San Antonio Spurs matchup: “Once the athletic department reaches out to me, then (FSU’s interest) is official. But they haven’t reached out to me. The athletic director hasn’t reached out to me yet.”
Boston already endured a noteworthy coaching staff loss this past offseason when the Charlotte Hornets hired Charles Lee as their head coach. Jeff Van Gundy, who served as a senior consultant for the Celtics last season, also left Boston and accepted a lead assistant coaching job for the Clippers.
So the Celtics could be preparing for the next member of last year’s championship staff to move on to a new venture.
Cassell, while appreciative for everything that’s come with returning to Boston, hasn’t lost sight of his larger goal. It’s been on Cassell’s mind, even throughout his nearly two seasons working with Mazzulla’s staff and considering the level of experience Cassell brings both as an ex-player and coach, the opportunity should arise soon.
“I just gotta find a general manager or president of a team to just believe in me,” Cassell told the “Come And Talk 2 Me” podcast in October. “Believe that I can get this done. I know I can get it done. I’m just trying to figure out, just working on myself every year as a coach trying to get better. It ain’t the Xs and Os. I think it’s just the other little things. Who knows what it is? But I’m not gonna give up until I get it. That’s how I was all my life. I still enjoy coaching the game of basketball.”
The Celtics are poised for another deep run at hosting the Larry O’Brien Trophy, but Cassell hasn’t detached himself from his lifelong dream either.
If Cassell is offered and does accept Florida’s presumed offer, it wouldn’t shatter his chances of returning to the NBA. The Seminoles have gone an ACC-worst 2-10 this season, just a year after leading the ACC with a nearly undefeated 13-1 record. So if Cassell finds a way to transform the program and get it back on track, it shouldn’t be too long until an NBA team reaches out with a head-coaching offer.
