BREAKING: Newest Boston Celtics wing explains motive behind free-agent signing

NEW YORK — Torrey Craig hopped on a flight from Chicago to Boston early Friday morning to get all the necessary paperwork done before officially signing with the Celtics. Afterwards, he got a tour of the facilities then got in a quick workout, all before flying to New York late Friday.

Now, he’s with the Celtics in New York ahead of their Saturday game against the Knicks. The team officially announced his signing Saturday morning as he’s the newest member of the reigning champs. Craig broke down why he signed with the C’s and what he hopes to bring after the team’s shootaround at Madison Square Garden.

“As a competitor in the league, you always want to play for something and compete for something,” Craig said. “I’m a super competitor and I want to play basketball the right way at the highest level. Just to get an opportunity to come play with these guys was like a no-brainer.”

Boston president Brad Stevens hinted at what the Celtics were going to bring in with their 14th roster spot: a wing. That’s exactly what they did, signing the veteran on the buyout market. Craig, 34, started the season with the Bulls but was waived after the three-team Zach LaVine trade.

Craig said he won’t play in Saturday’s game against the Knicks, “but hopefully soon.” He hasn’t played in a game since Dec. 30, 2024, with the Bulls as he dealt with a recent ankle injury. Craig said he’s still taking it day-by-day but feels good. In the meantime, he’ll soak up whatever information he can from the team.

“Just coming in and being an extra guy whenever the team needs it,” Craig said. “I think add to the wing depth of this team. Just being another defender, another physical body that you can throw out there and produce.”

The Celtics have a loaded roster, but it was clear they could use another wing after dealing Jaden Springer ahead of the deadline. The Springer trade was made mainly for financial reasons as the C’s save a significant amount in luxury tax penalties. Now, Craig figures to fit in as a depth wing, giving C’s coach Joe Mazzulla another bench option when the main guys are out.

Craig is a 35.5% 3-point shooter over his career 441 games played (168 starts). In the past, he’s played for the Nuggets, Bucks, Suns, Pacers and Bulls. Notably, he’s shot 39.7% from deep over the past three seasons over the course of 141 games and 441 3-point attempts. At 6-foot-7, the Celtics will hope the can be a big wing defender who can also hit open 3s.

“They’re a deep team, super talented,” Craig said. “Well-coached, well-disciplined. They play the right way. They know what it takes to win playing defense. Playing together and having each other’s backs. You can just see it. The team chemistry and they allow each other to feed off each other and play together and I think that’s why they’ve been so dominant these past couple years.”

Warriors’ next best option after Al Horford is painfully obvious, and it’s not hard to see why. With his departure, the team is left with a gaping hole in the middle, and it’s clear that they need someone who can provide a similar level of skill and experience.
