Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has suffered a significant injury and will miss the rest of the season, according to reports.
Martínez has been one of United’s most successful signings in recent years, exceeding expectations since his move from Ajax. Despite initial doubts about his physicality, the 27-year-old has proven to be a key player for the Red Devils.
However, injuries have plagued his time at Old Trafford. Last season, he managed just 14 appearances across all competitions due to fitness issues. While he has featured regularly this season, Martínez was forced off during United’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Speaking after the match, head coach Ruben Amorim expressed concern over the severity of the injury.
“We will assess him in the coming days, but I believe it is serious,” Amorim said. “As a player, you can usually tell when something is wrong. We will support him through this difficult time, just as he has supported us.”
Journalist Gastón Edul has since reported that Martínez has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament and could be sidelined for up to eight months.
“Lisandro Martínez has ruptured his cruciate ligaments, meaning he won’t play again this season,” Edul tweeted. “Recovery is expected to take between six and eight months, depending on the individual.”
Despite the setback, Manchester United have ruled out making any last-minute signings before the transfer window closes at 11 PM tonight.
Amorim reiterated on Sunday that the club is still exploring options to strengthen their attack, with Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku among the names linked. However, no deals are currently in advanced stages.
Sources indicate that United remain focused on long-term squad building and are unwilling to make short-term signings that could disrupt their summer transfer plans.
Additionally, representatives of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda have denied that United are negotiating for the teenager today, though the club continues to monitor his progress after he made his debut under Amorim.
