Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has his sights set on a second straight Super Bowl win as his side prepare to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in February 9’s showpiece event
The day Andy Reid bids farewell to the Kansas City Chiefs and the NFL is one that fans hope is far in the future.
With star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a formidable offensive line-up, and one of the best defences in NFL history, Reid has steered Kansas City to four Super Bowl appearances, clinching three victories.
The veteran coach will be vying for a fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy when his team faces off against the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX on February 9. While another championship win seems within reach, questions linger about Reid’s tenure with the Chiefs.
The 66-year-old has been at the helm since 2013, following a successful 13-year stint with the Eagles, which included nine playoff runs and a Super Bowl XXXIX appearance. Prior to that, he served as an offensive coach for the Green Bay Packers for six years.
However, Reid isn’t planning on leaving Kansas City anytime soon, with his current contract set to expire only after the Super Bowl in February 2029. By then, he’ll be 72, while star tight end Travis Kelce will be turning 40 in October of the same year.
Clark Hunt, the Chiefs owner, gave Kansas City supporters a reassuring message on ESPN last October, saying about Reid: “He certainly seems rejuvenated, I would say, by the success of the team in the last few years and having one of the most special quarterbacks of all time. I have no sense that he has any interest in retiring… soon, which is fantastic.”
Looking ahead, Hunt even envisioned Reid at the helm into his seventies as Mahomes approaches Super Bowl LIX at 29, yet also cautioned, “I think any leader needs to be thinking about succession… Eventually that day will come.”
In a conversation with The Athletic last July about retirement, Reid acknowledged his place in his career’s timeline and expressed his contentment with coaching the Chiefs: “I know I’m on the bottom side of this thing and not on the top side of the net. So as it’s coming, but I don’t know what it is. And, this is a great place to coach, and I’ve got good players.”
“I’ll be 71 at the end of this contract, and that seems like really old, you know, I don’t really know. And, so I well, we’ll see, see where it all goes.”
The legendary Bill Belichick currently holds the record for the most Super Bowl wins as a head coach with six victories under his belt from his tenure with the Patriots. Joe Gibbs secured a trio of titles with Washington, matching Bill Walsh’s success with the San Francisco 49ers, while Chuck Noll claimed four Super Bowl championships leading the Pittsburgh Steelers.
