The Kansas City Chiefs are busy preparing for Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. EST at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
As Andy Reid’s team focuses on maximizing their current roster, one NFL writer’s projections have linked the AFC champs to a former top-five draft pick as a potential backup to Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs’ depth chart lists Carson Wentz as Patrick Mahomes’ primary backup, but the Chiefs could switch gears this offseason by bringing in an athletic young quarterback with a potentially high ceiling.
NFL writer Cody Benjamin projected that the Chiefs may take a shot at former Jets starter and current Broncos backup Zach Wilson, who has thrown for nearly 6,300 yards so far in three NFL seasons.
Wilson did not play a snap for the Broncos this past season, but still may hold value among some teams, including the Chiefs.
“Kansas City has cycled through veteran No. 2s behind Patrick Mahomes,” Benjamin wrote.
“Wilson once drew lofty comparisons to Mahomes’ backyard play style. The ex-Jets could make for an Andy Reid project,” Benjamin added.
The Broncos did not pick up Wilson’s fifth-year contract option last April. The former No. 2 overall pick out of Brigham Young University is set to become a free agent this offseason.
