Taylor Swift turned to Sweet Disposition singers The Temper Trap to help her create the perfect birthday present for Harry Styles back when they were dating in 2012
Taylor Swift once employed the help of a hit Australian indie rock band to create a perfect birthday present for then-boyfriend Harry Styles.
The 35-year-old billionaire hitmaker dated 30-year-old One Direction heartthrob Harry from late 2012 until early 2013 – with fans around the world becoming obsessed with the love affair. And now, over a decade since the couple split, fresh secrets are emerging about their romance.
Aussie rockers The Temper Trap have revealed they were once asked by Taylor to help create a birthday gift for Harry. The group – consisting of singer Dougy Mandagi, bass player Jonathon Aherne, drummer Toby Dundas and keyboardist Joseph Greer – are behind the 2008 smash single Sweet Disposition.
The song was such a favourite of Harry’s that he got lyrics from the track tattooed on his arm. However, the Little Things singer got the lyrics wrong – permanently inking “Won’t stop ‘til we surrender” instead the correct words “Won’t stop to surrender.”
The Temper Trap are celebrating the 15 year anniversary of their debut album, Conditions, and have been sharing secrets about each of the tracks – leading them to share details of Taylor’s personal request. Frontman Dougy, 44, revealed in a TikTok video: “We heard about the tattoo before. We were on tour, I remember, I think he tweeted that he got it.
“So then, you know, it was brought to our attention. ‘That’s Harry Styles, blah, blah, blah.’ And then we were laughing about how it was wrong.”
He continued: “And then fast forward, I don’t know, whatever, in the future, we were at the ARIAs and Taylor Swift was a presenter or something. She came to our green room, with a piece of paper, and she goes, ‘Can you write the lyrics for my boyfriend? It’s his birthday.’
“We were like, ‘Ok, cool.’ So my dilemma was, do I write the right lyrics? Or do I write the wrong lyrics? I can’t remember which way I wrote.”
While Harry and Taylor have been reasonably silent about their past romance – seemingly preferring to make reference to it through song – the One Direction star has made occasional reference to the Cruel Summer singer in interviews. Back in 2017, he posed for a cover shoot with Rolling Stone Magazine and discussed an infamous photo of him and Taylor walking through Central Park on a date.
He remarked: “When I see photos from that day, I think: Relationships are hard, at any age. And adding in that you don’t really understand exactly how it works when you’re 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn’t make it easier.
“I mean, you’re a little bit awkward to begin with. You’re on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right? It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date.”
Asked if her songs Out of the Woods and Style were about him, Harry replied: “I mean, I don’t know if they’re about me or not… but the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere.” He added: “I write from my experiences; everyone does that. I’m lucky if everything [we went through] helped create those songs.”
