In previous reports, we’ve heard that the Jazz are asking for at least two future firsts for Kessler. It’s not far-fetched to say that Kessler has been the most impactful player for the Jazz this season.
He’s bounced back in a big way from last season, averaging career highs in points, blocks, assists, rebounds, field goal percentage, and minutes.
It looks like the Lakers may be getting some pressure from their star player, Anthony Davis, to make a move happen. He mentions he’d like to play at the 4 with another big.
Knowing this, it makes sense that the Lakers are making a lot of calls on Kessler.
But just because the Lakers want Kessler, it obviously doesn’t mean the Jazz have to make a move. With Kessler’s improved play, it’s very unlikely the Jazz would/should relent on a trade proposal.
That said, if the Lakers offered two unprotected future picks, the Jazz should definitely consider it. Yes, Kessler is playing like a top-ten center in the league, but he has a contract coming up, and Utah will have to make a decision.
Kessler is likely going to demand a pretty high price,e and considering Utah hasn’t found a cornerstone star yet, they have to make sure they have their timelines in order.
But this type of potential move should only be made if the Lakers meet the Jazz’s demands.
Utah has proven they can lose enough games this season to earn a top-5 pick in the draft. There isn’t as much motivation to make a move as there might have been earlier in the year.
It’s an interesting question for the Jazz, but they sit in a much stronger position now with their goals much more in hand than in previous seasons.
It seems far more likely Kessler is on the Jazz long-term than not.
