The Red Sox on Wednesday acquired catcher Blake Sabol from the Giants in exchange for international bonus pool space.

Sabol, who also has played first base and the outfield, was designated for assignment by San Francisco last week to clear a roster spot for Justin Verlander. In 121 career big league games over the last two seasons, the 27-year-old Sabol — who bats lefthanded, making him a potential complement to the righthanded Connor Wong — has hit .243/.313/.392 with 13 home runs.

To clear a roster spot for Sabol, the Red Sox designated righthander Chase Shugart for assignment. Shugart, who made his big league debut in 2024, allowed four runs in 8⅔ innings while striking out eight and walking three across six relief appearances.

ESPN announced their “Sunday Night Baseball” schedule through the first two months of the season. The Red Sox are slated to have one Sunday night contest, when they host the Cardinals at Fenway April 6. The contest will come in the middle of a seven-game homestand.
